Restoring Our Beloved Beach
Exciting developments are taking place at Park Shore Beach, where a significant renourishment project commenced in early January. This initiative aims to combat the natural erosion that has consistently affected the beach, a situation further worsened by the series of storms experienced in 2024.
The renourishment project is a meticulously planned effort to restore Park Shore Beach to its standard 85-foot width as measured from the dune line to the mean high-water line, providing ample space for both residents and visitors to enjoy the sandy shores. The scale of the project is impressive, requiring a substantial 312,000 tons of sand to be redistributed along the coastline. In an update just received, the Coastal Management Program Manager Anrew Miller has confirmed that the project is progressing on schedule and is expected to be completed by early April. Approximately 167,00 tons of sand have been deposited on the beach so far.
Work on the project is taking place six days a week from dawn until dusk. The schedule reflects the importance of the beach to the community and the commitment to returning it to its former width as swiftly as possible. Having things in place before the important turtle nesting season starts is necessary as well.
Once the sand placement is complete, attention will turn to the dune areas. There are plans to add plantings to these regions as a final step to stabilize and protect the newly restored beach. These plantings will help secure the dunes against future erosion, ensuring the longevity and beauty of Park Shore Beach for years to come. The plantings will hopefully begin in 4-6 weeks. Stay tuned for further updates as the renourishment progresses and we look forward to celebrating the completion of this essential project.
